Australian men undergoing testing for prostate cancer should be reassured biopsies are a very safe procedure, and with appropriate antibiotic coverage, pose a very low risk of infection. Urological society of Australia advocate PSA testing in the 55-69 age group

In keeping with the recent evidence from the European study, the urological society of Australia and New Zealand advocate PSA testing be offered to all men between 55 and 69 years. If the PSA level is abnormal or the rectal exam is abnormal a needle biopsy of the prostate can then be offered as long as the patient understands the risks and benefits or diagnosis and treatment.
